Chinese astrologyUnlike western astrology, the Chinese zodiac is purely based on a calendar cycle, not constellations. On the surface, Chinese astrology appears far more concerned with long-term effects - the trends and course of years - than occidental astrology is. The 12-year base cycle of the Chinese zodiac may seem simple at first glance, but the full extent of the cycle, once the five elemental attributes and their yin/yang (negative or positive) dualities are taken into account, takes 60 years to complete. Since Chinese astrology is based on the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the year of the Rat (or any other) does not begin on January 1, but on the Chinese New Year sometime in late January or February according to the western calendar. The animals of the Chinese zodiac, in order, are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. The five elements in Chinese astrology are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Even-numbered years are invariably yang in nature, and odd-numbered years are yin. The elemental cycle completes in ten years, as each of the five elements must occur twice (yang Wood, yin Wood, yang Fire, yin Fire, yang Earth, etc) for every element to occur in both a yang and a yin year. Since the zodiac is a twelve-year cycle, the Rat is always yang; the Ox is always yin, and so on. If one year is a Wood Dragon year (which is yang), the next year will be a Wood Ox year (which is yin), while in twelve years from the starting year, it will be a Fire Dragon year, and in twelve more it will be an Earth Dragon year. 60 years from the initial point, it will once again be a Wood Dragon year, and this 60-year anniversary of the year of one's birth is commemorated with special celebrations in some Asian countries. In addition to the 60-year cycle, which is thought to determine one's outer persona in Chinese astrology, the lunar year itself is divided into 12 months. A person's month of birth is used to determine their 'inner animal', which is thought to affect one's inner self, love life, and aspirations. Furthermore, as the 24-hour day is divided into 12 two-hour blocks according to ancient Chinese time-keeping, the exact time of day a person is born can reveal their 'secret animal', or the true sign which personality is dependent on. A legend says that the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac were chosen by the Jade Emperor, who invited all the animals to a banquet. As one version of the story goes, the rat played a joke on the cat and told him the banquet would be the next day. The hapless cat slept through the day of the banquet, when all the other animals were given the gift of a place in the zodiac, and has never since forgiven the rat for his mischief.
